Is it beneficial to have a turf lawn?

MAC BRILEY, expert:

I'm Mac Briley and I'm a turf expert. One of the common questions that I do get as an expert is if having a lawn is beneficial to the environment and should you have a lawn.

Filtering

The average lawn is going to remove twice the amount of carbon from the atmosphere than a single tree could remove in a 10-year period. As a filter, lawns are capable of filtering over 3,000 gallons worth of rainfall in any single event, removing pollution from our rain water and filtering that so we can recharge our groundwaters to be healthy.

Personal Benefits

There are also some personal benefits to having a healthy home lawn. First of all, think about our property values and how they are increased when we have a well-manicured lawn. There's a lot of financial benefit to us there as well. A good, healthy lawn and a nice landscape will help reduce our own personal stress. We will come home and we'll feel better and more comfortable in our home environment.

Cooling Temperatures

Lastly, on a hot summer's day, having a nice, healthy stand of turf grass around your home is going to reduce the temperatures around your home anywhere from 30 to 50 degrees making you much more comfortable and able to spend time outside and enjoying your home.

Environmentally Friendly

I think that so the final point that I would make and to re-emphasize to everybody about why do we want a good, healthy home lawn is that it's environmentally friendly.

It's good for the environment, it's financially beneficial for our homes, and provides a lot of mental well-being for each and every one of us - for our children, our pets, and our family as a whole.
