10 Tips to Prevent Landscape Damage During Monsoon Season

Monsoon Storm Prep Checklist

Don’t rely on luck to make it through monsoon season! Here are 10 tips to prevent damage to your property before, during and after the monsoon.

  1. COMPLETE A STORM PREP ASSESSMENT

Ask your landscape provider and ISA Certified Arborist to complete a storm assessment identifying drainage issues, dangerous trees/plants, and other storm hazards on your property.

  2. Haboob (dust storm) resulting from a monsoon
Dust storms (or “haboobs”) are unexpected, unpredictable, & can be miles long + thousands of feet high.
    IDENTIFY HAZARDOUS TREES & SHRUBS

Look for trees and shrubs with structural hazards like broken, dead or dying branches and dead wood. Pay attention to mature, heavily leaning trees.

  3. COMPLETE A SAFETY WALK

Identify safety issues around walkways, roadways, entrances and electrical lines. Look for risk factors like large trees and top heavy shrubs in areas predisposed to wet soil.

  4. PROTECT NEWLY ESTABLISHED TREES

Brace newly established trees with strong cables to keep them in place. Young trees require extra support and protection against monsoon winds until they develop a sturdier root base and trunk.

  5. CLEAN YOUR LANDSCAPE

Remove plant debris and landscape trash such as leaves, seed pods, fallen flowers, and broken stems/twigs. Cut down on the amount of post storm cleanup while helping keep your pool filter clean.

  6. Monsoons frequently produce strong winds
Monsoon winds can get up to 115mph, turning otherwise harmless objects into dangerous projectiles.
    CLEAR STORM DRAINS & WASHES

Removing debris from washes/storm drains is usually outside a standard contract scope of work. Heavy downpours cause water to flow in washes and over driveways, sidewalks, streets, and parking lots increasing the chance of flash flooding.

  7. ADDRESS DRAINAGE ISSUES

Repair poorly graded areas to improve water flow. Pooling water kills plants, causes erosion and attracts mosquitoes.

  8. PRE-EMERGE TO PREVENT WEEDS

Pre-emergent herbicides help prevent weeds from germinating. Apply pre-emergent before monsoon season to limit the growth of weeds.

  9. ASK FOR A DETAILED PROPOSAL & LONG-TERM PLAN

Request a written proposal with a detailed scope of work from your landscape and tree care provider. Consider a 3-5 Year plan with goals and budget mapped out.

  10. PRE-ARRANGE FOR 24/7 EMERGENCY SERVICES
