A Concrete Example of One Team, Many Talents

Most weeks, the Naples team at Village Walk of Bonita Springs is focused on the familiar work: turf, beds, irrigation, and trimming.
Recently, the team took on something different—a concrete project outside its normal maintenance job description.
The community needed a concrete slab for its maintenance team shed. The job required forming the slab, preparing the base, installing a drainage sleeve, and completing the pour to create a durable surface for equipment and daily work.
Rather than hand off the project, the Naples team saw an opportunity to take on a challenge.
Edwin Gonzalez, Irrigation Manager – South, led the project, gathering materials and making sure the team had the proper personal protective equipment. Safety came first as the crew laid out the slab, prepared the site, and installed the drainage sleeve before completing the pour.
Then came an unexpected advantage: a teammate with a skill set that went beyond his job title.
Omar Beltran, a trim crew leader at Naples Reserve, typically focuses on hedges, edges, and landscape maintenance. During a conversation with Marcus May, Naples Branch Manager, it came up that Beltran also had masonry experience.
Beltran joined the Village Walk project and brought the experience and attention to detail needed to finish the slab properly and build something that could withstand equipment and Florida weather.
“Often, we don’t realize all the skills and experience we have right here on our teams,” May said. “When we communicate, share what we know, and give our people the opportunity to take on a challenge, we can solve problems together and deliver more for our customers.”
Beltran wasn’t assigned as a mason, and Gonzalez wasn’t running a concrete crew. The work got done because teammates communicated, shared their expertise, and stepped outside their normal roles.
